Deeper Sectorial knowledge, Digital Preparedness and Ethical Excellence are pivotal in Maritime Journalism”- NSC boss
The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council ( NSC), Dr. Akutah Pius MON has said that the sectorial knowledge, digital preparedness and ethical excellence are key to unlocking excellence in the practice of journalism in Nigeria’s maritime landscape.
Dr. Akutah, who was represented by Mr. Moses Abere, the Director, Special Duties Department at the 2025 Seminar for Maritime Journalists in Lagos acknowledged the contribution of journalists in the apex sector.
” Over the years, maritime journalists have worked closely with regulators, operators and policy makers to illuminate the challenges and opportunities of the sector. Your work has contributed to greater transparency, improved public understanding and stronger accountability within our maritime landscape.
” The Nigerian Shippers’ Council in particular, under the Federal Ministry of Maritime & Blue Economy, has benefitted from your professionalism and sustained coverage of our regulatory interventions, reforms and collaborative efforts to enhance efficiency and competitiveness in the port environment”, he said.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, First Mediacon, Mr. Sesan Onileimo appreciated the NSC boss for sustaining the concept of organizing an annual training programme for maritime journalists.
Onileimo described journalism as a dynamic profession that requires training and retraining of practitioners.
He called on other agencies to support the NSC’s initiative of training workshop for journalists in the maritime beats.
The Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Emeka Akabogu, a maritime lawyer harped on the importance of factual and accurate reporting for maritime journalists.
Dr. Akabogu, who also spoke on the activities of maritime journalists, said the adoption of technology will drive a more efficient port system.
While calling on the agencies of government to work assiduously towards meeting efficiency of Nigerian ports.
The former acting National President of Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Dr. Kayode Farinto made a presentation tagged “National Single Window: Harmonizing NSW for Economic Development”.
Dr. Farinto described journalists as the bedrock of the nation’s maritime sector.
