Akutah meets WTO DG, Ngozi-Okonjo Iweala

In a strategic move to unlock Nigeria’s vast maritime potential, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Akutah Pius Ukeyima Esq., MON, FCILT, FInsTA, Ph.D paid a visit to the Director General of the World Trade Organization, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Their discussions centered on the critical challenges facing the shipping industry, port operations, and the broader maritime sector, as well as key aspects of international trade that impact Nigeria’s economy.

The discussion also explored potential solutions and identified new opportunities for sector development.

NOTING persistent infractions characterized by discourteous, dismissive, and unethical communication from shipping companies to consignees, agents, and port users concerning critical operational milestones, including cargo arrivals, export cargo evacuation, and operational approvals. NOTING FURTHER the unlawful and dilatory practice wherein shipping companies withhold operational approvals or decisions under the pretext of awaiting instructions or authorization from foreign parent companies or principals.
