In continuation of their advocacy visit to different Stakeholders in the Industry, the Complaints Unit of the Council was at Cosco Shipping Company Lagos recently where they charged the liner to comply with the International Best Practices for Econmic growth and Ease of Doing Business in the Country.
tasked them to forward their legitimate complaints to the Council for amicable resolutions.
The new head of the Complaints Unit, Mr. Daniel J. Orume, a Deputy Director and his team also urged Cosco Shipping Company to forward their legimate for amicable resolution .
Orume, who stated that they the Council is unhappy with the volumes of complaints received especially at this digitilized era which he described as “contrary to the Federal Government Policy of Trade Facilitation and Ease of Doing Business in line with the International Best Practices.
He however reminded the liner that the Council as an unbiased umpire will only be glad receiving less or no complaints from the Stakeholders in the Industry, and this could only be achieved when ALL parties conform with rules and regulations in the Industry by doing the needful
Responding, the Management of Cosco Shipping Line expressed happiness with the new approached adopted by the Council in resolving complaints.
Although, they lamented that why the Council is receiving complaints from some importers is that a quite number of them do not have the required knowledge of what Shipping is all about, “they will import cargo but they will not have money to duely clear and take delivery, they always abandoned the cargo which definately will attract demurrage, that is when they will run to Shippers Council to report contrary and seek for waiver”
Cosco further expressed dismay over the attitudes of some shippers for non return of their boxes which they said is affecting their operational efficiency in the Country.
The liner further appealed to the Council to properly sensitized Shippers across the Country on what Shipping is all about ”if a consgnee doesnt have money to import and clear his/her cargo they should be strongly discouraged from that and requested the Council to assist the company in recovering their unreturned empties.
Cosco also complained on the letters from Marine Police asking them to put on hold some containers which definately will acrued demurrage and that has to be settled by the consignees not Cosco. Cosco further complained on the.attitudes of some Custom officers especially on gazetted cargoes in Ikorodu lighter terminal.
The Complaints Unit re- asured the liner that as an unbiased umpire, no player will be allowed to cheats on another in this Industry. Orume urged them to formally forward their legitimate complaints to the Council for critical assessment and possible resolution for the betterment of the Nation.”s Economy,” he said.
