Akutah Advocates Stronger Data Protection Framework in Port Regulatory Sector.

The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA), Dr. Akutah Pius, MON, has called for stronger collaboration with the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to enhance data privacy, security, and responsible data management in the port economic regulatory sector.

Dr. Akutah made the call when the National Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, and his team paid a courtesy visit to the NPERA’s Abuja Liaison Office.

The NPERA CEO described collaboration between the two agencies as essential, noting that data plays a critical role in the Agency’s regulatory operations.

He stressed the need for a deeper understanding of data privacy, information security, and the effective management of data to support the Agency’s evolving responsibilities.

According to him, cooperation with the NDPC would help strengthen NPERA’s capacity to handle data responsibly while promoting compliance with relevant data protection requirements.

Earlier, Dr. Olatunji congratulated NPERA on its transition from the Nigerian Shippers’ Council to the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency, describing the development as an important milestone in the Agency’s institutional evolution.

He explained that the NDPC is responsible for safeguarding personal data and promoting compliance with data protection standards across public and private sector organisations.

The visit provided an opportunity for both agencies to explore areas of mutual interest, particularly data privacy, information security and the responsible use of data in strengthening institutional effectiveness.

The proposed collaboration is expected to support NPERA’s efforts to build a more secure, efficient and data-driven regulatory framework in line with its mandate to regulate Nigeria’s port economy.
