Border Closure: Nigeria, Victim of ECOWAS Protocols

LEADERSHIP, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2019. PAGE 29

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Mr. Hassan Bello, has said that Nigeria is a victim of the Economic Community of West Africa State (ECOWAS) Protocols.

Speaking recently in Lagos during a stakeholder meeting to proffer solutions on the way forward regarding the border closure, said instead of being a beneficiary, Nigeria was short-changed.

The NSC boss called for a review of most of the sub-regional protocols, saying there is need for the ECOWAS Protocols to be reviewed. “Remember that the Federal Government just signed the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), we have to review this protocol because Nigeria seems to be a victim rather than beneficiary”.

He also said that “the economy in Nigeria is defeated. We have the poorest economy in Africa and so, we should not. He reiterated that the Council is in support of the steps taken by the Federal Government even as he beckoned on the stakeholders to do same.
