Customer Service Week: NSC Advocates Mental Health, Stress Management.

In commemoration of the 2024 Customer Service Week, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council organized a day sensitization talk on Mental Health and Stress Management with the employees at the Council Headquarters.
The sensitization talk-themed, “Mental Health and Stress Management”, was a collaboration effort of the Servicom and the Medical Unit of the Council.
The presentation identified key ways to manage stress and achieve good mental health.
In his opening remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Barr. Pius Akutah, MON who was represented at the sensitization event by the Director of Human Resources, Mrs. Adaku Okam, applauded the initiator of the sensitization and acknowledged the need to pay more attention to our health.

The Medical Unit boss, Dr. I.F. Ricketts in her presentation harped on the importance of mental health.
According to her, anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, and trauma are major defects of excessive stress. She also mentioned changes in mood and thinking patterns, difficulty coping with daily life, and withdrawal from social activities as other consequences of poor mental health situations.
Dr. Rickett noted that staff should be encouraged to seek professional help in breaking from any form of mental stress to avoid mental breakdown.
The medical expert appeals to the Council to invest in educating and creating more awareness, encourage open conversation, and promote inclusivity and empathy to ensure and achieve a mental health stress-free workforce.
“To manage stress, you have to identify the cause of your stress, find out what triggers your stress, and then avoid them”, She added.
She called for a work-life balance to achieve a boost in well-being and productivity in the Council and advised the staff to set clear boundaries, establish a healthy work schedule, nurture relationships, practice self-care, and pursue a personal interest.
In the same vein, Mrs. Esther Nanle, Deputy Director Servicom/Nodal officer, appreciated the Management, staff and stakeholders for the pivotal role they played in actualizing Council’s goal and achieving its mandate.
