The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Shipper’s Council ( NSC), Barr. Akutah Pius, MON has said that the Port Economic Regulations bill when passed into law will promote efficiency and streamline processes in the nation’s maritime sector.
Barr. Akutah stated this at the 2024 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference held at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), in Lagos on Tuesday.
NSC boss, who was a panelist at the technical session of the programme, said the Council will have a strong legal backing to execute its regulatory activities in furtherance to enhance the marine and blue economy
According to him, relevant government agencies and stakeholders in the maritime industry are strongly supporting the Council’s bill.
He also spoke on the role that the NSC has played through its Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) for resolving conflicts for users and providers of shipping and port services.
The Chief Executive Officer further noted the activities of the Council as Lead Agency in the implementation of Nigerian Port Process Manual( NPPM) would provide seamless operations at the ports
Responding to the stage of the National Single Window, the NSC boss told the gathering that the Nigerian Shippers’ Council and other agencies are working tirelessly to ensure the implementation of the platform at the nation’s ports.
The Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr.Dayo Mobereola who was represented at the event by Mrs.Nneka Obianyor, Head of Ship Registry, highlighted the agency’s activities as related to ship registry and other safety activities.
Dr. Augustine Ogoma, Chief Magistrate, Imo State Judiciary called for the introduction of Admiralty Law as a course in all Nigerian universities and emphasized the need for training and retraining of lawyers on admiralty law.
