Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has unveiled an online registration portal for regulated service providers and users operating at Nigerian ports.
Addressing stakeholders at the launching of the online portal in Lagos, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of NSC., Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Jime said the new platform guarantees a safe and secure business environment, which also eliminates the challenges of faceless stakeholders in the ports’ sector.
Jime also maintained that the launch of the portal marks a milestone as the Council is being upgraded from manual registration to a fully automated registration platform.
According to him, Nigerian Shippers’ Council as the Port Economic Regulator wants seamless operation at the ports as he called on all the stakeholders to ensure strict compliance with the online registration portal.

The Assistant Director, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Mr. Benjamin Ivghreghiweta made a presentation on how to register with Ship- pers’ Council through the portal.
Director, Consumers Affairs Department of the Council, Chiefs Cajetan Agu added that one of the responsibilities placed on the Council when it became the nation’s port economic regulator in 2014 was the responsibility to register all port operators and port users.
According to him, the need to know genuine stakeholders informed the launch of the online registration portal.
In an interview with the Forum, the Director General, Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, Mrs. Vivian Azubuike emphasized the importance of enlightenment campaigns on the newly-created online portal.
Some stakeholders who spoke with Shipper described the launch of the online portal as a welcome development and expressed optimism that the platform would aid their operations at the ports.
The regulated port service providers and Port users include Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) freight forwarders, truckers, seaport terminal operators, stevedoring companies, shippers, off- duck terminal operators, badge operators, among others.

NSC’s mediatory role yields results as maritime workers suspended strike
Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has suspended the strike embarked upon at the nation’s seaport about a month ago.
The strike was suspended due to the intervention of Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), the Port Economic Regulator at a meeting held at the Training Room of Nigerian Shippers Council on Monday 5th June 2023.
The meeting had in attendance the Maritime Workers union, Shipping Companies/ Agencies & Freight Forwarders Employers Association (SCAFFEA) and Nigerian Shippers’ Council.
Recall that the strike was as a result of the breakdown of negotiations between the Union and the Shipping Companies/ Agencies & Freight Forwarders Employers Association (SCAFFEA) on Minimum Standard of Condition of Service in the Shipping Industry.
After deliberation, the decision reached was as follows: the Union and Shipping Companies/Agencies and Freight Forwarders Employers Association expressed commitment for sincere negotiations on the Minimum Standard of Condition of Service in the Industry
Parties agreed to a timeline of One (1) Month starting from Monday 5 June 2023 to 4th July 2023 for completion of the negotiations.
The parties are to establish an acceptable Minimum Standard on the Condition of Service in the Shipping Industry especially on gratuity.
Based on the above, the Maritime Workers Union agreed to suspend the industrial strike.
