In commemoration of World Maritime Day 2025,the Minister of Marine & Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, alongside the Executive Secretary/CEO of Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Dr. Akutah Pius, MON, joined key maritime stakeholders to recognize their invaluable contributions to the sector.

This year’s theme “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” spotlights the government’s unwavering commitment to developing the maritime industry to its full potential.

Central to this commitment are initiatives to upgrade infrastructure, promote renewable ocean energy, and ensure maritime activities significantly boost national economic growth.

The celebration reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to preserving its maritime heritage, adopting sustainable practices, and leveraging modern technology and investment to enhance sector capacity.

Through these initiatives, the government aims to foster growth, resilience, sustainability, and inclusivity in the blue economy, driving Nigeria’s maritime sector towards a prosperous future.

PREAMBLE & FINDINGS: WHEREAS the Nigerian Shippers' Council is statutorily mandated to promote efficiency, transparency, and customer-oriented service delivery within the Nigerian shipping industry and port sector. NOTING persistent infractions characterized by discourteous, dismissive, and unethical communication from shipping companies to consignees, agents, and port users concerning critical operational milestones, including cargo arrivals, export cargo evacuation, and operational approvals. NOTING FURTHER the unlawful and dilatory practice wherein shipping companies withhold operational approvals or decisions under the pretext of awaiting instructions or authorization from foreign parent companies or principals.
